FOOLISH Things We’ve Been Told About Textured Hair

Don’t Let These Myths Fool You …

Happy April Fools Day! While we love a playful prank, there’s nothing playful about all of the crazy things we’ve heard about textured hair over the years, so we’re here to set the record straight & share tips (no tricks) to live your best hair life.

Fools Tip #1 - Oil Drops Calms & Controls Frizz

Fact: This is FALSE. Adding oil drops to your hair makes your hair oily. It lays on top of your hair cuticle, keeping moisture OUT of your hair. Remember, water and oil don’t mix.

TIP:

To properly help calm & control frizz, first add a leave-in conditioner to your hair BEFORE anything- Unite has products for your specific hair type to detangle, hydrate & protect your hair gently.

Second, work in your styling product-Mirame BOTH is a foam mousse that allows you to define your natural texture or blow it straight while strengthening & adding shine.

Third, apply shine drops- Bumble & Bumble’s Hair Dresser’s Invisible Oil absorbs quickly into hair to help soften, tame, defrizz, & detangle to help protect against breakage.

Fools Tip #2 - Cutting Your Hair Makes it Grow Faster

Fact: FALSE. Although it doesn’t make it grow faster, it does promote healthy hair and prevents split ends! I mean who wants long, damaged hair!?!

TIP:

Get a trim every 8-10 weeks to help prevent damage from split ends.

Fools Tip #3 - Textured Hair Doesn’t Grow

Fact: This is FALSE. It can break easier because typically textured hair is on the finer side and bends around every corner, but just like washing our face, our hair needs a maintenance routine too.

TIPS:

To help protect your natural texture from breaking unnecessarily:

  • Use a wide tooth comb and leave-in conditioner to gently brush through your hair-this will minimize breakage.

  • Use a gentle sulfate-free shampoo to keep your hair hydrated.

  • Apply a deep moisturizing mask at least once a month.

  • Avoid heat tools as much as possible.

  • Avoid using heavy styling products, like gels and hair sprays- they cause build up and weigh down the hair leading to breakage.

  • Lastly, use a good pillowcase. Think of it this way, cotton causes friction, causing your hair to buckle, split then break. Use a rayon or silk pillowcase that will allow your hair to slide.
